2015-09-01 – Collaboration project with the CocktailBar Mundial

New collaboration with the CocktailBar Mundial

I  worked recently on a new collaboration with the Cocktailbar Mundial. It started by taking pictures of the venue, and covering their parties. But a photographer can do more than simply taking pictures to promote such a place, by also being part of the entertainment. This is how we  installed a photo booth during a ladies night event, together with the fellow photographer Sahare Studios. The customers loved it so there gonna be more of it in the future !

Photographing “Pop In Porto”

On Saturday September 13th happened the 5th edition of Pop in the City, the urban adventure race for women in Europe. This time it was taking place in Porto (Portugal) and besides visiting the city it was fun to be part of it as a photographer. The event started at 8am in the morning fog of the Rio Douro and ended at night on a private sand beach resort. Demanding, but rewarding…

During the event I had the chance to photograph the participants rappelling from the roof of a 70m tower, to visit the kitchen of a Portuguese restaurant cooking “Francesinha”, and to take wonderful portraits in front of the sunset at the beach. Oh and of course,  hundreds of smiling faces…

The pictures from the 3 photographers can be seen on the official Flickr of Pop in the City, and and a small selection of mine in my portfolio.

How to protect your gear at a color festival

Shooting at a color festival is a great occasion top take beautiful portraits, but you must be aware that the color powder is a threat for your lens and camera.  The powder is as fine as flour and will enter through any gap or unsealed join. It is in fact made of rice or corn flour so at least it is not harmful for yourself.  In this article I provide advices to keep your equipment perfectly clean and safe during such an event.

I also invite you to have a look at the pics I took during color festival. I show a limited selection on this website but you can see the full album on my Flickr : https://www.flickr.com/photos/damienfournier/sets/72157646901592626/

Photographs from the Holi Fusion Festival in Eindhoven

The last week end I had the opportunity to shoot for the Holi Fusion Festival in Eindhoven. The Holi fusion is a music festival inspired by the Indian Holi festival, where people throw color powder at each other.

This was a unique opportunity for colorful portraits and party pictures, and a great fun to be there as a photographer. So I literally took hundreds of portraits, exhausted my battery and filled my memory card. I show a limited selection on this website but you can see the full album on my Flickr : https://www.flickr.com/photos/damienfournier/sets/72157646901592626/

Also in a following article I will describe how you can protect you photography equipment during such an event.

The simplified Formula of Depth of Field

The common photographer knows that the Depth of Field varies with the aperture, focal length and subject distance. But which one is the dominant parameter ? And how much is the influence of each parameter ? This article uses the equation of the DoF, and demonstrates that when the DoF is short, it varies proportionally with the aperture, and with the square of the focal length and distance to subject.

So here comes the only formula you need to know when you deal with short DoF but not macro photography :

dof_formula_3
- A is the aperture number
- c is the circle of confusion
- f is the focal length
- s is the subject distance
- H is the hyperfocal distance
- DoF is the depth of field

In the rest of the article you can read where this simplified formula comes from, what it means in practice, and how accurate it is compared to the exact formula of DoF.

Depth of Field and Subject Magnification

The focal length and the distance to subject have an influence on the Depth of Field, and this influence is simple to understand if it is explained with the notion of subject magnification. The subject magnification is a function of the focal length and the distance to subject. It is the parameter that influences the most the DoF, much more than the aperture. This articles explains what is the subject magnification and in which way it impacts the DoF.

Composition – Why do parallel lines converge ?

Parallel lines can be projected either as parallel or as converging lines on a 2 dimensional photograph. As converging lines they are considered a distortion of the reality, nevertheless they can be useful to give the illusion of depth. It is your choice as a photographer to represent those lines parallel or not, and this article explains how to control it.

Depth of Field and Aperture – A simple relationship ?

It is common knowledge among photographers that the Depth of Field increases when the aperture decreases, but by how much ? Unfortunately there is no simple relationship between the DoF and the aperture, but this article provides a accurate and simple answer to the question.
